Teaching RSHE in KS1: Naming body parts and positive relationships

Outline

Does your school adequately help prevent abuse and protect children through RSHE teaching?

Description

The focus in primary school should be on teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships.

Pupil knowledge of correct terminology for external genitalia, taught in an age-appropriate manner will support effective RSHE, safeguarding and develop an important foundation for future teaching and learning in RSHE and Science. Knowing when to start this teaching, what is age-appropriate and how to manage pupil’s arising questions can feel a challenge.

This course will enable your school to deliver effective teaching and assessment of these topics.

Outcomes

  • Increase confidence to use and teach correct scientific terms to describe the main external parts of the body in an age-appropriate way.
  • Teach sensitively to pupils about permission seeking and giving, and the concept of personal privacy.
  • Explicitly teach the features of healthy relationships, what family means and who the people are who can support them.
  • Identify assessment of learning strategies.
