Essential Calculation Skills

Outline

Are you looking for engaging and effective ways to develop calculation fluency?

Description

Calculation forms a large proportion of the end of Key Stage One and end of Key Stage Two SATs tests. It is crucial that teachers develop the calculation fluency of their pupils from the beginning of Year 1.

This half day course will focus on Key Stage One curriculum content but will also equip delegates with the strategies and teaching ideas to develop calculation fluency for learners of any age. Ideal if you are looking to disseminate for wider school impact.

Practical activities and time to network with colleagues will help delegates to build up an understanding of how to enhance calculation fluency within their own setting.

Dedicated time will be spent on each of the four operations to ensure they leave with a detailed understanding of the key teaching components needed to enhance calculation fluency for your pupils.

Through attending this session, delegates will also receive a pack of teaching resources designed specifically for developing calculation skills, that can be used immediately back in classes.

Outcomes

By the end of the session delegates will:

  • Have a clear understanding of how the CPA approach can be used effectively to develop calculation fluency
  • Know how to support pupil’s calculation fluency by using a range of manipulatives
  • Understand strategies to develop pupil’s conceptual understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and leave with a pack of teaching resources to use back in school.
