This practical, hands-on session will cover the use of manipulatives and representations within mathematics from EYFS to Year 2. Whether you have invested in manipulatives and need further guidance on how to use them or you are wondering which manipulatives would be best to purchase for your learners, this session will help your decision making. The CPA (Concrete Pictorial Abstract) approach is fundamental to the Mastery approach. Through using this CPA approach, delegates will explore the use of multiple manipulatives and representations within the context of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Topics covered in the session will include: place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions; making it ideal for the EYFS and KS1.
Delegates will leave with an abundance of teaching ideas related to the use of manipulatives and representations and have time to reflect on follow up actions required on their return to school.
By the end of the session delegates will:
- Know how to use multiple manipulatives and representations to teach various topics in mathematics across EYFS and KS1
- Be clear about how and when to move children onto using pictorial representations
